Ideas for pieces to play with my band?

Post by Chris Carr »

I recently sent my flute back to the mainland for a complete overhaul, and since it's come back to me, I can't put it down. I've been converting some of my lead guitar parts in one of my bands to flute solos.

My other band is more of a traditional folk/celtic rock sort of thing. I've been looking for some cool pieces to do that feature the flute. It's a bit harder to work it in with that group, as I'm the primary singer and guitar player. I thought of maybe looking for some sort of duet to do with the fiddle player. I had considered a couple of Jethro Tull tunes, but some of my faves, like Pussywillow, have the flute coming in over the vox. Watching the live vids shows that Ian is playing guitar or mandolin on those pieces, and the flute is covered by the keyboard.

Any suggestions?

Can you do your own arrangements?

I pick up piano song books at Half Price Books for ideas. Usually there are 20 plus songs to whet my appetite. I also use these to write quartets. Fun stuff and I get to pick the kind of music I really love. Since the flute is an instrument in C, you can also look over a piano players shoulder and play the melody line.
