We own a Lamberson Flute #572 purchased from "Tip" Lamberson in the 1970's. We have had an extremely difficult time finding a tech. who can make this wonderful old instrument really play in the manner it was intended? It is my wife's second instrument, but she just can't trust it for those real tough gigs when her other flute is out. We just got it back from a well known and respected "Flute Specialist" shop accompained by a bill for $800.00 and it still plays like one of those early Chinese knock offs of a Bundy on a bad day. I remember "Tip" telling me years ago that the "Stra..." pads would not work with his instruments and he was right, although other techs. said he was wrong. Proof is in the "Pudding" because it just doesn't work. They took those pads out and replaced them with still poor results. Mr. Lamberson could always make it play but we haven't had much luck since he went out of business and passed away. The original head was replaced a number of years ago with a 9k gold Drelinger and it worked beautifully as long as the flute was well regulated and had tight pads. Any suggestions? We don't mind paying for good work, but also understand it is going to take someone who is willing to give a bit more "TLC" to get this old bird horse running.

Sorry to hear of your bad experience.
What pads does it have now, Felt or something else?
Are you looking for a local tech or do you want to send it somewhere? Perhaps we can recommend someone for you with a bit more info.
Did you contact the original repairer with whom you were displeased and try and reconcile this situation?

Hi Joe,
Thank you for your kind response. The original tech. went back with leather covered type pads that you would see in a Haynes or Powell of that vintage. What one would expect of a major overhaul was done and we just did not get anywhere. I suggested that there might be a leak in one or more of the soldered tone holes, but that was dismissed. In a word--"leaky." We purchased the instrument new from Mr. Lamberson and the instrument has never been damaged or mishandled at any time. It worked very well as long as Mr. Lamberson did the service work. We didn't want to mention who the tech. was, but they enjoy a fine reputation in a city with a Major Sumphony. It just seems it is going to take some "NCI" work to fix the problem. We are happy to send the instrument out to have it evaluated. We just are afraid we are going to reach a point of diminishing returns. We really don't want to put it in a display case and enjoy looking at over the fireplace mantle. It is a fussy old war bird but we believe it is worth saving. Any suggestions you might have are greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks!

Have you tried Alton McCanless? He worked with Tip and would be very familiar with his flutes. If you are in Iowa, You also might want to try Denny Lawson over in Davenport.ferris wrote:Hi Joe,

Hello Joe,
Alton told me he is slowing down a bit but will still do repads. He is willing to have a look. I will also contact the gentleman in Davenport and see if he wants to have a look. Will let you know what we find out.
Thanks Again ,
Dr. Gail R. Hall

I am original owner of Lamberson flute #387. Were you ever able to find a technician to get your Lamberson flute serviced to your satisfaction? I would like to find a tech that can do a good job.
Thx!
