Swabbing out with newspaper

Post by windchime »

have you heard of this.......swabbing out the flute with rolled up newspaper?

I have not been able to find a suitable flute swab (I'm a beginner), so I rolled up a newspaper the size and length of the flute and put it in and gave it a few twists and the moisture was immediately gone.

If this is something everybody already knows please excuse me.

You should be able to find a flute swab at any music store. If not, there are lots of places online where you can order them. Flute World, Carolyn Nusbaum, even Amazon. Google is your friend for shopping online. :D

Uggh.

The paper will be abrasive inside the flute's body and leave ink deposits, or peppery paper dust.

A cotton rag is better than a paper.

Even if you do nothing, the moisture in your flute will be gone, regardless of whether you use a newspaper.

The problem is... whether you wish to take care of your flute properly, or just 'fudge by'. I'd never want a flute cleaned by someone who used newspapers! Having a window cleaner who claims he can get the job done with newspapers doesn't inspire confidence either!

Sorry - nothing against tabloid journalism :P
