flute slips out of place

Post by windchime »

My flute keeps slipping down into the curvature of my chin from sweating. Are you supposed to hold it up in the proper place with your hands? I'm beginning flute but advanced on the clarinet.

Thank you.

That is often a problem when first starting the flute. The trick is to stabilize it with the proper hand positions. Here are a some links that might help.

Read those and then if you have questions, feel free to ask here for more help!

Also, some players will add a postage stamp or something similar to the lip plate. The paper will help to keep it from slipping due to sweat or skin oil.

this sometimes happens to me when performing and i find that putting some talcum powder on my chin helps. not heaps. i use a make up brush to apply it and you can't even see it, it just helps for me.

thanks guys - the information has been very helpful. I am lovin learning the flute. I am looking for a teacher but haven't been able to connect yet. There is so much good help from the Internet. But I still want hands on with a teacher.

I traded my beginning violin for a Gemeinhardt SP2 at the music store where I bought the violin and the foot joint wobbles and fits real loose. Can this be fixed? And the head joint fits super tight and it's hard to get it fitted together - can this be fixed? It seems to play fine and I just leave it together (since I'm always playing it).

Thanks again!

Both issues can be easily adjusted by any decent flute repair shop. A good shop will have the tools to expand the loose footjoint tenon to tighten it and others to shrink the head joint tenon (if needed, it might just need a good cleaning and polishing to get it working smoothly). Get it taken care of soon. If the footjoint is loose and falls off, it could be bent. Also, be sure that you don't grip the keys when inserting the headjoint (hold the body at the barrel, above the keys), otherwise, if the headjoint is so tight that you have to use a gorilla grip to assemble it, you may bend some keys in the process.

I suggest keeping your flute in the case when you aren't playing it for a while. It's far less likely to get damaged. If left on a table or even on a flute stand, it could be damaged if bumped or knocked over. Also, it's more likely for the silver to tarnish when the flute is left out of the case.

this is good news that it can be fixed and that I didn't get sold a bum deal. I don't want to keep it in the case :( because everytime I have to take it apart I don't like how tight I have to sqeeze it to turn it. There is no possible way that anything will happen to it where I have it laying on a thick terry cloth towel on top of one of those white plastic stackable drawers they sell at Walmart. I definitely am not gripping any of the keys when I assemble and disassemble it.

Have a great day - thanks a million!
