how to play loud with good sound

Post by bandgeek09 »

I really need some tips on how I can get the loudest possible sound from my flute while keeping good sound. In my band we are always drowned out by the other instruments (but really there are only three flutes in my section) But when we play with the melody it is so hard to play out so it can be heard. Also I have a hard time getting low register notes heard. Dose anyone have any tips on how I can play louder?
Thanks,
Amy

Try taking low note breaths, breathe from your diaphram.
Also try accenting the notes, it will really help make a difference. All flutes want to be heard! :D

Normally in an ensemble, it is not a matter of volume, but of certain tone qualities.

Darker tones that are not trying to blend typically cut through an ensemble. Bright tones will do the same thing, but far less effectively, or pleasantly.

So, while support exercises would be of great benefit, if you want to be heard, through such a large ensemble, try to go for a darker edgy-er tone color.

Don't make it your standard tone, but merely add the color to your palette for situations like these.
