Embouchure problems - can you help me, please ?

Post by vandoren »

Have had flute for 4 days and can only produce notes around A in first octave if :

1: I support behind lower lip with my tongue.
2: I have quite an obvious gap in lips - much more than the straw size opening referred to in the lesson on this site.
3: I do not have any 'face ache' from trying to form an embouchure which is usually the case ?

The tongue may be a habit from my clarinet days but when I try to avoid using it for support I cannot produce a note and if I continue the way I am, I will have problems tongueing later on.

I do have dentures

Any advice welcome :?

Well the gap size is probably an issue, if you're letting the air spread that much you won't get much of a sound. Bring in the corners of your mouth.
When it said strawsize embouchure, it litterally ment strawsize. Get a straw, see how your lips form around it and blow through, that should help.

And besides embouchure, are you controlling your airstream fast enough to go into the higher octaves? It's a proven fact that flute uses more air than any instrument, you need more air to play a flute than a tuba even!

And supporting your lower lip with your tongue is bad. If it's behind your lower lip you won't be able to tonuge notes at all, or you will but incorrectly. The tip of your tounge should hit the roof of your mouth where your gum meets the teeth, like saying "Tah"

As for the dentures thing, I have no clue what you should do about that. Maybe if you take them out it'll help?

Actually, tuba and flute use just about the same amount of air, so it's not true to say that flute takes the most of any instrument. It is fair, however, to say that it wastes the most of any instrument, since the way flutes produce sound is to split the airstream, meaning that not nearly all of the air actually makes it into the instrument.

To Vandoren, don't become accustomed to playing with your tongue supporting your lower lip. As you've already realized, it's a bad habit in the making and will severely restrict your ability to articulate. Most likely it's just a matter of embouchure strength. As you progress, the muscles required to form a stable embouchure will grow stronger, and you won't need to use your tongue. Take it slow and work on learning the good habits (a good live teacher could help a lot)....After all, you can't expect to play like Rampal after only a week!

The gap in your lips will mean you don't get sufficient air pressure/speed, so you will need to work on closing that. However, without being able to observe your playing, it's not really possible to make specific suggestions on what needs to be done and how to get there.

You should not end a practice session with your face aching. That is a sign of excess tension, and can result in unnecessary problems down the road that will severely inhibit your playing. Make sure that your embouchure is firm, yet relaxed, and work from there.

Thanks Guys.

Get tongue into correct position and get aperture down in size to increase air velocity - makes sense. As my embouchure develops, then I would need no tongue support, but need to break the tongue habit now before it becomes ingrained. I'll work on this now and try to be more patient, but at 66 time is getting short
