I was at a California Leadership Academy over the summer, and one of the main music judges who was running the program told the student leaders that by having the following through memory, you'll be able to play 85% of all music:
a. knowing the 12 major scales at a minimum of 120bps in 8th notes; and further studying in minors and modes (incl. theory for scale structures)
b. Clark #2 Studies (the one I'm trying to study but I forgot how the notes go)
c. arpeggios
I'm not really sure of the guarantee of this claim, but since this came from one of the judges in a major music association around here, I've decided to try it out.
One of my music techs in band practiced the Clark No. 2 study out of a trumpet book, but I'm sure it applies to all instruments.
The Clark No. 2 study in Bb starts in the middle octave (I broke it up in sections to make it easier):
Bb, C, D, Bb,
C, D, Eb, C,
D, Eb, F, D,
Bb, C, D, Bb,
C, D, Eb, C,
A, Bb, C, A.....
I forgot the rest, so I can't begin applying the study to the scales without knowing the rest of it.
Does anyone know which notes will finish up the phrase in Bb major? I'll be able to transpose to different keys once I know the rest of the structure. Thank you!
