Chair Positions

Post by chermo »

My ex husband and I are not sure but we think our daughter is in first chair in her 5th grade band. Can someone please tell me where 1st chair is located in the band? Is it on the outside of the 1/2 circle then the rest of the players are inward or is it closest to her teacher then they go out from there? I hope I make since, please if anything try to draw me a diagram, she is a flute player and there are 5 other flute players in her band.
Thanks
Cheri

It depends on the director. Some directors place their best players on the ends while some place them in the center. I would ask the director.

I asked my daughter and she said she was first chair in the concert that night that her instructor put her there for that concert but she may not be there for the next concert. She said they switch off and on but she was not sure if that was because of her playing or just cause the instructor wants them to each have a turn at 1st chair. Oh well it was just a question, I am guessing in 5th grade they don't really do the chair thing anyways so I was just wondering how it worked. I was always told that first chair was the outside one but his mom said it was the chair closest to the instructor. Who knows like you said it depends on the instructor. I was going to send her an email to see how she was doing anyways in band just so I know she does have a A+ in band again so far this quarter but I never had a chance to meet with her teacher to see how she was doing. Thanks for your reply.
