one last item.

while I taught myself, I heartily recommend a few lessons to start with
if it is at all possible. They will get you off to a better start.

i wouldn't know how to get private lessons or anything...not in this small town at least. How does one go about finding someone?

I assume you have a band of some sort (perhaps a high school band, or a community orchestra) in the area. I would start off by talking to band directors and their flute players. Usually that's the fastest and easiest way to find people. If you have any musician friends, they might be able to ask around for you. I believe that it's possible (depending on location) to find listings of teachers through the internet as well.

If you dont find anything that way, you could start calling local universities [within driving distance if there is one] and usually there is a music department of some sort. So, you could try that as well, because usually, a professor wont turn down lessons unless they are absolutely swamped.
