How to Maintain a Flute

Hello There,

I was wondering if you could help with something.

I am a beginner flute player, and have just bought my very first flute (second hand.)

I understand that I will need to clean and maintain my flute regularly, and was wondering what are the essential pieces of equipment I will need to do this?

Is there anything I should avoid? E.g. A metal cleaning rod

And are there any resources you can point to (online or otherwise) that can give good instructions for cleaning and maintaining a flute?

Any help at all greatly appreciated.
