dry lips

I notice as my lips dry out my embrouchure goes south. Outside of constantly try to moisten them by licking them is there any kind of "stuff" you can put on them to keep them in shape and the air passing smoothly through them?? Lip gloss is not an acceptable alternative for me, if that is even an idea at all!!

Don't put anything in your lips. They will get accostumed to it and you will have to use this "product" all the time.
One thing you must do is drinking water properly. Dry lips are a sign that you probably is dehidrated.
Believe me, it happend to me recently, and all I had to do was drinking half a glass of water every hour for couple of days. After that, you'll have only to keep maintenence.

Zevang's right, not to mention that most of the products available to prevent dry lips have the potential to interfere with proper embouchure formation. Drink more, and you should be fine.

A Vitamin E-based lip balm (when you aren't practicing, of course) may help.

usually, if I have dry lips (particularly if I am about to perform) I put plain chapstick on. Not cherry, not mint. Plain. It helps a lot. However, that is just me.

Thanks all for the replies- I will try the drink water suggestion first then move on to the applied material -- I assume this material wipes easily off of the lip plate.

If you have Vaseline around your house, you can apply Vaseline to your lips before going to sleep at night. It will help lock in moisture.

Also, you may want to try exfoliating your lips every so often to (gently) remove dead sking. Coat your lips in Vaseline, and then take a tooth brush (not the one you use on your teeth!) and gently brush over your lips for a few minutes.

if you do put on some sort of lip balm, it usually wipes off really easy, just dont leave it on there after you are finished. Wipe it off immediately to avoid damage to the finish (I have seen where the residue was left on the flute, and discolored the lip plate badly.... however it took a long time to cause this).
