Can someone help me identify this flute??

Post by blueskyflyers »

Hi,

New to the forum, sorry if this isn't the place for this post. I don't play the flute yet, but i'm obsessed with this high pitched flute. You can here it in "Bear McCreary - Farewell Apollo" on youtube at around 1:00 and for most of the song. I have no clue what key this flute is, how to find it, how much it costs, or if it's a very advanced flute or if a beginner could play it. Any information would be really appreciated! Thanks, Dave

The flute is actually an Irish tin whistle. It's sometimes called a penny whistle because they are very simple instruments and some are quite inexpensive, but professional grade whistles can be pricey. You can usually find them starting under $10.00. It is one of the simplest and easiest instruments to learn to play. Just blow into it gently while covering the appropriate holes. They are available in many sizes and different keys for playing tunes in different keys. Get one in the key of D to start as that is one of the most popular and most common whistles for playing tunes in the key of D or G.

This site has some good info for beginners:

The Sweetone Whistle by Clarke is an excellent, yet inexpensive whistle to learn on:

The Generation Whistles are also popular and low cost:

I have a Sweettone that I very much like but I also have several Generation whistles in different keys.

And what's great about PP's advice is that he told you to get a D whistle (most common), and that bit of music is in D, so you should be able to learn it on your first whistle. Most of it centers on "A" but it's being played on a D whistle.

I personally play on the tunable Susato whistles, but my best friend plays Irish sessions a lot and she has several different brands. There are many quality brands out there at all price points! :)
