I'm an experienced amateur flute player with very little piccolo experience. I'm thinking about
getting a piccolo. I know that most good players who can afford it go with grenadilla over silver,
but I do like the look and feel of the silver headjoint.
Does anyone have experience doing a side-by-side comparison of a Yamaha YPC-81 (all wood)
and YPC-82 (wood with silver headjoint)? I'm wondering if the advantages of the wood would be
offset by the silver headjoint.
Thanks,
Matt

Re: wood piccolos with silver headjoint
Hi Matt,

I'm an experienced amateur as well and play a Yamaha YPC-80 which is an older version of and nearly identical to the YPC-81. It has very nice projection without being shrill. My stand partner in band plays a silver Powell piccolo. It's a very nice instrument but the tone is definitely on the piercing side. She recently had a wooden headjoint made to fit on her silver Powell body. It looks a little strange, but the improvement in her tone is very noticeable.
Most vendors will allow you take their instruments home for a trial period. Why not give them both a try and decide for yourself?
