Flute Society of Kentucky Competitions

Post by fluteguy18 »

Hey everyone, this is for those of you who might be attending the FSK annual conferance next year. I have a copy of the repertoire list for the competitions [middle school, high school, and collegiate artists, young artist competition, and I think the concerto competition as well]. As of right now it is looking as if the festival will be held at Murray State University, but this isnt final. This info wont be publicly released on their webpage http://www.fskentucky.org until July 1st I believe. I just figured I would spread the word.

I will post the repertoire list this evening when I have the list in front of me. The ones I DO know right now are:

Collegiate Artist:

Recording round: Hymn of Pan by Charles Delaney
Must be post marked by Nov. 1st.

Final Round: Telemann Fantasy of their choice, and Autumn Reflections by Jennifer Higdon.

Maybe I've misunderstood something, but it doesn't seem very fair for anybody to be announcing the competition repertoire to their students prior to an official announcement by the competition coordinators. I realize you are trying to level the playing field a bit, but July is a significant amount of leeway time these teachers apparently "in the know" are giving their students in which to prepare.

If this type of information is so insecure, I can only imagine how partial and unorganized the competition must be as a whole. I don't think I'd enter a contest like that, nor would I encourage a student to do it. It seems awfully unfair, not to mention morally wrong, to compete against people who had about 2 months less practice time than others simply because they didn't have a teacher who yacked out the repertoire early or read this bulletin board.

At the risk of sounding trite, it's important to remember that winning is not everything. And nobody respects a winner who beats those whom were disadvantaged to begin with and who did not compete on a level field.

Just my opinion.

very true. It appears that all of the professors have the list [we just talked about it in my lesson today and they were all given the lists at the same time during a meeting at the most previous festival] and it is just the repertoire list hasnt been officially released online. However, professors are going to schools and passing out flyers to high schools and middle schools. So, the Young Artist competitors will not be getting the music until July unless they know someone who will give them a copy of the list [and if they dont, they just have to request a copy of the list from those in charge of the festival].

So, it seems to me that this information is public, but isnt going to be online until July when they post all of the final details of the festival. I am sorry that I wasnt as clear as I could have been, because I want completely clear myself in regards to those who had a copy of the list. I have editted my original post.
As for the judging.... I sat in on the competition and have read the procedures, and the process is as fair as it is possible. You send in a recorded copy of the first piece [unmarked]. One person gives each applicant a number, and numbers the CD's. They give it to the panel of judges [of whom do not know the names of the performer on each disk]. They listen to the recordings, and choose the top 4 in each catagory. The 4th 'best' at that point is an alternate, and the top three perform the last two pieces in a concert. A different set of judges [who do not know the competitors] judge the live performance.
