My first notes

I am getting practice in my first notes around A in first octave. I am not attempting to tongue yet but am finding that when I get the best tone, my tongue has found its way to behind my lower lip and is pressing it to the lip plate. I am sure that this must be wrong as it would impede tonguing later on.

Am I correct in what what I say above about developing a bad habit ? Where should my tongue be when blowing long notes ?

I used to play clarinet and may be trying to support a non existant reed

Your tongue should generally be behind your top teeth... mine ends up being just a tad lower than where the teeth meet the roof of the mouth.

Are you using a method book? I highly recommend Trevor Wye's Beginners Practice Book for the Flute, Vol. 1 -- it comes with a CD of piano accompaniments for the solos throughout the book, so you can play along with it.

There is a lot of text surrounding examples in the book, helpful tips and pointers for technique and tone.

Thanks MonikaFL. I only got the flute yesterday and have been using the tutorials on this site. I really need to find a teacher for some preliminary lessons to avoid early habits which will impede later on. My main problem is that I am an impatient 'old git'
