Hi, I just recently joined this forum and so far it has been very
helpful for me. I am 13 and in 8th grade. This is only my second year playing,
and I am 1st chair in my schools top concert band. I recently started playing
piccolo and I really enjoy making music. I hope to talk to you all in the
future. -Jenn

Welcome to this forum! I wish I had had this kind of outlet when I
was in middle school! I'm in my 2nd year of college right now and have been
playing for 8 years. Do you take private lessons, or are you just active in the
band as I was? I couldn't afford lessons when I was in Secondary School- only
in college was I able to get lessons- and they're for free b/c I'm a Music
Education Major. I hope you enjoy this forum- it's really a great place to get
advice and to talk about music!

hi, I took lessons at the music store I live by for about 2 months
when I first started. It wasn't that helpful for me though because the
instructor never acually played flute herself. I decided it wasn't helping me
much so I quit and mostly I have just been very involed in school, although I am
hoping to find a good private teacher in my area but I have had no luck so far.

when i first started playing the flute, i took piano lessons so it
would've been too expensive to put flute on top of that. my friends pretty much
taught me, i kept practicing, and now i'm second chair! but having flute
lessons definitely helps; i'd recommend everyone to take them.

Hey you sound great!!! I'm amazed at how fast you learned. I've
been playing for 3 years, but I don't think I'm at your level yet. HAHA Just
wondering did you play any instruments before the flute?

I'm going to see James Galway in Danville, KY (I think) in a few
weeks. I get to miss Wind Ensemble rehearsal to do so- it's a big deal for us.
Only flutes are allowed to miss rehearsal that evening! I can't wait to hear
him live. We've got nosebleed, back row seats, and they're $65 a seat! Hope
you enjoy your front row! I'm jealous!

hi, james galways concert last nite was awesome! i spent alot of time
looking at his fingers and was really amazed at how he could move his fingers so
fast. after seeing that concert it has inspired me to work harder at the flute
and i cant wait to see him in concert in the future. also, i got to meet him
after the show and got his autograph as well as his wifes and a picture with the
both of them. im still getting over how great it was. i hope you enjoy your
concert or did enjoy yours as much as i did. Jenn

Hey there Jenn, I love James Galway! His tone and amazing technique
never ceases to leave me in shock. I had the fortune of meeting him and acually
playing with him during a concert a few years ago, thanks to my flute teacher
and my sister (who was chosen to play with him because she was really good!). We
played Pied Piper Fantasy and I'll never forget the excitement, I even saw
people I knew in the audience! It was an amazing experience and I can still
remember some of the notes and melodies we played, too bad we had to return the
music, it was so great! Anywho, congradulations on seeing him in the First row!
That's got to me one seat I'll never be able to sit in, I never have that
money to spend, lol! -Abby

If Jen is from Seattle she sure traveled a long way to listen to
Galway at the Naples Philharmonic in Florida. I know seeing Galway can be a
memorable experience for a budding flute player but if I look at the map
properly (Sleepless in Seattle ref) Seattle is way up here and Naples is way
down there, no two cities in the Continental US are much further apart. Please
Jen don't tell me you traveled that far just to listen to him play? Since those
posts are last school year, I wonder if Jen is getting ready to start HS and a
whole new band. Drop us a line Jen.

I live in Cape Coral, Florida about an hour or two north of Naples.
Yes, I am starting a new school next year. I'm in the marching band and we have
already started having rehearsals. The flute section is pretty good with about
14 or less players. There are no seniors at all and you can barely hear us in
the whole group except for quiet parts and when we have a soli. I'm really
getting into music this summer, and spending alot of money. I went to a flute
camp and this week I'm going to a band camp. During the first week in August I
have Marching Band Camp and thats should be very tireding. Well I better get
going I have to practice for lessons and camp tommorow. Talk to you later, Jenn
P.S. If you want to talk my Aol instant message screen name is: JennL819 and my
msn messanger and also email is fluterjenn@msn.com

Mariner? There is a band camp at Cypress middle, across the river
from you, this week and they usually have the Larson's run the flute camp. They
do a great job and are highly respected teachers as well as performers. Does
your school have a Symphonic or Concert Band for you to play in or is Marching
your only opportunity to play?

I go to North Ft. Myers High School. But Mariner is really close and
alot of my friends go there. Beth Larsen is my private teacher and she taught
the flute camp and cypress a few weeks ago that i went to. this week im going to
the High School Honor Band camp there and the band director from Port Charlotte
teaches it. I'm really tired rite now cuz i woke up at 7 went to camp from
8;30-4 and then had flute sectionals at school from 5-6 and school band
rehearsal from 6-9. My school has a wind ensamble and a concert band and we
probably are adding one more band because of the amount of kids we have in our
band. Where are you from penny?
