Can you identify this 'flute'?

Here's a tough one for you - can you ID this flute? It' made of a dark wood with the 'bakelite like' ends shown...it has a sliding joint piece where it looks like a reed is suppose to be fixed...I collect old instruments, have never seen one like it.

Hi Dan,

It's not a flute. It's a single reed instrument called a bawu (you'll find lots of info on it on google).

It has the same range as the renaissance recorder, however sounds completely different - rather like a cross between a harmonica and an oboe.

They have a strongly diatonic folk sound to them. Some very interesting ethnic music and sound from it.
