What music can be considered into modern flute
repertoire? I am auditioning for grad school and developing my audition
repertoire currently. What would be good? I was thinking the Schubert Variations
over the Syrinx or Density 21.5, but I don''t know... I''d also consider the
Godard Suite or the Poulenc Sonata, though I am already doing the Enesco as my
French requirement. Speedy reply needed! Thanks. *Shannon [:)]

Grad school auditions, fun fun....I'm in the process
of doing that right now too. Personally, I think the Godard Suite wouldn't be
impressive enough for auditions. The Poulenc Sonata is good, but seen more often
for undergrad auditions. From looking through lots of brochures I think the most
common pieces that schools ask for or require are Prokofiev or Martinu Sonata,
Martin Ballade, Dutilleux Sonatine, Jolivet Chant de Linos, and Nielsen or Ibert
Concerto. And as I'm sure you know, just be very careful to follow the
requirements. Sometimes it says a 20th century piece, other times a 20th century
concerto. The Schubert could be good, but it wouldn't be considered a modern
piece, but more a romantic piece, which is always good to have in contrast to
the modern work. And I would personally pick the Varese over the Debussy, a
little more extended technique is involved, which is good to have. Best of luck
and I hope auditions go well!

I'm certainly not one to comment on this, as I've
never auditioned for grad school, but as far as new music... I absolutely love
Gary Schocker's music. I'm playing Musique Francaise right now.. difficult,
but wonderful.
