Missing Crownpiece!

Post by dancingflutist3000 »

Okay so one day I was in my room practicing my
flute. After about 1 1/2 hours I decided to call it quits and went to put my
flute away when I noticed that my crown piece was missing from my headjoint! I
searched around all of the obvious places it could be, under my chair or stand,
under my bed or desk. Finally I looked all over my floor in my room even places
that were far from where I was practicing. Then I looked and saw the vent and
thought "Oh PLEASE tell me it didn't go in there!" But then I decided if a
piece of metal went clanking down the vent it probably would have been heard.
I'm continuing to look for it but it it doesn't turn up soon I'm going to
have to look into replacing it which could be alot of $$$ anyway does the crown
affect the sound of the flute because when I play my flute it doesn't really
sound any different though to my untrained ear who knows? I really hope my crown
peice is found! By the way, please spare my the responsibility speech, my dad
has been an accomplished musician for years and well I've had my earful is all
I can say.

Missing Crownpiece!

i can't believe you lost your crown!!!
sorry....i'm just kidding when you said to spare you the responsibility speech
i just had to.... anyway, first of all, i don't think a crown would cost a lot
of money if you decide to replace it. a friend of mine that i go to school with
has a lot of fun making crowns for flutes and i think in some cases it can make
a difference. for me, i felt some of them articulated better others had a better
3rd octave. and it's kinda odd to think that could be possible. my flute
teacher has also added weight to his crown because he likes the sound better.
however...it is a SLIGHT difference. no matter what level you are at, a
headjoint crown isn't going to make or break you as a player. i think if there
was a big difference you would have known right away when you're crown came
off, and flute companies would try to capitalize on making different kinds of
crowns for flutes. anyway, ihope that answers your question. it kinda comes down
to a cosmetic thing....flutes just look a little silly without a crown :) best
of luck!
