I wanted to share this as it's one of my favorite funky club excerpts of all time. A downtown Harlem joint anno late sixties .. A jazz funk trio, consisting of flute, bongos and guitar to set the right groovy mood.
I must say, this clip among other performances is one of the sole reasons I picked up and started playing the flute. Such a great diversity in articulation and the sound you can create by embouchure and vibrato technique. Now let's analyze the flute solo and the player, who to this date is unknown. Sure looks like Bill Cosby though?
1. What kind of flute is that? Is it a standard flute, the mouthpiece looks smaller.
2. It's obvious he playing over chord scales, but can you recognize the scale used?
3. Now his sound articulation is not straight forward, it sound muted somehow?
Well anyway, share your views and enjoy this funky piece ..

Sounds like an Alto flute to me. The music on that clip was pre-recorded, because there was also a bass in the clip that was not shown in the video. If he is playing on a regular flute, he is hitting a lot of low B.

Dd Blues/E Pentatonic

This is another reason I think it is an alto flute.
As far as the "Bill Cosby", I don't think so. It may be someone like Hubert Law. He was the only one at that time(that I know of) doing that kind of playing on an alto flute.
Hope this helps

It might be Hubert Laws, although there are several other jazz session flutist that fit the bill .. Sid Ramin compost the score and he was a NYC guy, so it's prolly New York session players on the album. And you are probably right, Hubert Laws was NYC based at that time ..
Here is another clip, not as funky as the previous ..
Christmas eve in New Delhi .. They would not let me in with the
flute in Taj Mahal so I had to try it somewhere else
lol
And excuse my bad improv, I've only played flute since summer 09.
