I know this is a flute site but I just want to comment that I,
for the first time, tried bassoon this week. I was surprisingly, hmm I don''t
want to say good, but I could get a tone on all of the notes the instructor
asked me to play (she told me which fingers she wanted me to lift and put down).
I was also surprised since it was the first time I had tried a double reed
instrument. The bassoon is so cool and I think I would play good on it but there
are a few problems. 1. One of the reasons (other than it''s elegance and tone)
I decided to switch to flute is it''s lightweight and easy transportion. The
bassoon is HEAVY even worse than my saxophone. 2. Bass Clef.Since I''d just be
learning the bassoon I''m already way behind everyone else and having to learn
bass clef would put me that much further behind. 3. In high school you are
expected to buy your own bassoon and they cost 1500+! 4. Also switching to
bassoon is a PERMANENT switch at our school, meaning if I switched bassoon there
would be no turning back. Do you think these frivolous reasons for not playing
bassoon?

this depends on your opinion, if you decide to not switch and
get serious on flute, you do realize that a good (sankyo, muramatsu, brannen
brothers..)flute can cost well over 10-20 thousand dollars. but, a good basson
can cost a lot too. also, if it will be permanent, then you should try bassoon a
little longer before making the ultimate decision. that is a VERY big decision.
that is true that flute is small and light, but don't you have storage rooms at
your school? if you do, there should be no problem with the bassoon's size,
except maybe when you take it home. if you swithch, you'd have to pratice a l
[:0]ng time before you can actually make the transition between treble and bass
clef.. s[:blackeye:] rry i am talking to much.. but tell me when you choose!
