Thumb Problems

Post by johnnyredgate »

I have displaced second thumb joints i.e. nearest the wrist on both hands, worse on right. Technically subluxation of the 1st MCPJ. Doctors say put up with it (but progressive), wear splints or fuse the joints. I'm worried about how any of the options might affect by flute playing (immediately and in the future) so was wondering if any of you flutists had experience of playing with thumb splints or how badly joint fusion would affect movement required for flute playing (especially left hand). The problems are do not seem to be caused by flute playing as the joint displacement started about 7 or 8 years ago and I only picked up the flute again 5 years ago after a 30 year break. Thanks for any advice.

I've played with a brace on my right wrist/thumb with no difficulties. In fact, it really helped out--I had the equivalent of carpal tunnel in my thumb. The brace gave good support and kept my thumb from hurting worse.

Can't say though how one on the left thumb would affect playing. I'd think it would hinder since you have to move that thumb.

I can say from my toe issues that if you can avoid fusing, DO SO!! Try all other options before going that route! Good luck with this.

Thanks for that Kat. I'm going to have to try the splints I think. I'll leave fusion until the knuckle starts poking through the skin.
