Yeah, I have heard that excuse before. I have ran into issues with the scale of the instrument, but not with the pitch. Anything else has either been the player, an instrument adjustment, or changes in temperature.

Lastly, it is my opinion that any quality flute in good playing condition can be played in tune with practice.

I smell a new flute purchase Missy! Whatcha buyin?

 Naaah, Phineas, I'm a poor college student now! I'm just doing a lot of reading and trying to understand stuff, so whenever I run across something that I'm not sure about I ask a lot of questions. I noticed that the other flute students all have relatively new-made flutes and got curious about new vs old, etc. Altho, come to think of it, I've been researching some of the not-so-well-touted, older flute makers and have gotten reaaalllly intrigued by their products -- might be something I'd be interested in trying out in the future if I ever have funds again for flute purchases!

Right now if I'm able to buy something it will be a better piccolo. Hopefully I can manage that by the time the next semester starts. I do lots of window shopping (or internet-looking, I guess would be the better term .... ). So many flutes, so little money ..... !!!
