airy wasting

Post by dancingflutist3000 »

My friend (the one that a month ago got braces) is STILL
having tone problems on her flute! Whenever she plays she sounds airy and you
can barely hear separate notes. Our band director says she isn''t getting
enough air in her flute and is wasting air out the side of her mouth but I
suspect there could be another problem. Is it possible that''s it''s the
flute and not her?

<<Is it possible that's it's the flute and not her?>> I
think it would be a good idea for both you and the band director to try her
flute and see if either of you have the same problem. That would eliminate her
flute being the problem. I don't have any experience with the issue of having
braces and flute playing. I have read that most issues that come with getting
braces and flute playing are resolved as the player gets used to the braces and
are usually short term. There is a girl in my daughters band that is/was having
difficulty with her tone and the band director told her to take her retainer out
and apparently that helped a bit. Kim

I think she may be wasting the air because her lips arent
completely covering her teeth if she closes her mouth and her lips stick out
farther than they did before she had braces that could be the problem so if she
practices extra hard i think she'll be better and my friend also said there is
one spot if you havebraces in the side of your mouth that it hurts to play so
try and form a good embrochure while not hurting herself
