Hello flutists, Can anyone
recommend a good flute teacher in So. California? I am a saxophonist/clarinetist
who has never been able to get very far on flute due to my "teardrop" shaped
upper lip. I need a recommendation for a teacher who specializes in adapting to
this condition. i.e. playing on the side. Any other ideas/suggestions would be
appreciated. Thanks you.

if you were from northern cali, i
could help you out with some teacher suggestions. however, i do know of some
teachers in southern cali, don't know exactly where you are or how much you're
looking at spending on lessons. there's gary woodward who is wonderful, he's
adjunct faculty at usc and the flute professor at biola. jim walker also teaches
at usc. i've personally worked with gary woodward and know people that have
taken lessons with him, and i can honestly say he's a great teacher as well as
one of the nicest people. my current flute teacher is great friends with jim
walker and i've never heard a negative comment about him. however, i'm sure
their lessons are quite expensive. about your teardrop, i know that i have one,
and have been working for a great deal of time trying to accomodate it. i play
off to the side a little bit. you may want to try and get in front of a mirror
and see where your embouchure hole is when you play flute. if it is off to one
side, try and recenter the headjoint to where your embouchure is. another
suggestion i was told as well that may help is think about raising your upper
lip (it's a little difficult to explain) but sometimes that may help flatten
out your teardrop. there's a few suggestions. best of luck with your teardrop
and finding a teacher!

Dear Jimmy, Both Boglarka Kiss
(Fluteland.com Teacher) and myself are in the Los Angeles area. She has had
experience with the "teardrop" lip (although I do not think anybody really
specializes in it). So, the best thing would be for you to contact her (you can
do that by sending her an email through the discussion board - her username is
"boglarka"). By the way, she is really a great flute player and teacher and you
are going to learn a lot from her. Regards,
