Who do you mean.. like teachers? Do you have a private teacher? If not, it might be useful to get one that could help you one on one each week.

Do you wear makeup? That is always notorious for leaving black marks on the chin. Something about the silver interacting with the makeup.

I wonder if the person at the music store really knew anything about flutes or was just trying to sell a product? I would be very skeptical about this... anything that's a powder I would not put anywhere near my flute. I can just envision a mess that could create... and I can see the powder getting ...

There's lots of swabs out there that people are trying to sell, but honestly, there is nothing better than a plain old piece of cotton t-shirt. :)

Wow, $8000 to spend.. you have a lot to work with! I would say that you don't even need to spend that much for a quality instrument. I have never tried a Miyazawa, but I do own a Sankyo (artist model) and I absolutely love it. It cost me about $5000 (a year ago.. I think it has gone up in price sinc...

I'm like you, Kim, I have no clue what this "grade" thing is all about. When I was in school it was just... you keep playing music that challenges you and you automatically get better. In some ways I don't think it's a good idea to categorize things like that.. putting music in boxes.. but maybe tha...

I wouldn't lie, just say exactly what you feel.. that you have learned a heck of a lot from him, but you need to grow more as a flutist. And that you need a different perspective. It's amazing how different flute teachers can be. If he's a good teacher, he will understand.

Tell them in the nicest way possible to f*** off. :) It was very rude of them to say that.. even if flute WAS easier (which it's not), why would they say that? My guess is to make themselves look better. Anyone can learn fingerings of an instrument and how to make a note out of it, but not just anyo...

My brother-in-law attends Berklee and loves it. It seems like a really cool school. But I don't know how it compares to other music schools, and about the technology stuff.

I'm not familiar with your particular piccolo, but speaking only for myself, it seems like those upper notes are just notoriously sharp and difficult to bring down. I wish I had a simple answer to it.... I guess just try whatever you need to to get it in tune! As long as you're not sacrificing the i...

I've never heard of it either; it's probably one of the many obscure student flute makers. Probably not the best instrument.

I'm sort of in the same boat in that I was away from flute for awhile and then got back into it. I'm not sure about the teaching thing (although I'd like to know more about that myself!), but as far as playing again, try to play each day if you can. And even take lessons if you can. I took lessons f...

Have you actually picked up your flute to try? 'Cause you might find that you know more than you thought.

Regardless, take some lessons. You'll be just fine.

My absolute favorite CD is James Galway's "The French Recital." It is all the great French pieces that we love to play, played by the master! It's beautiful, I'm absolutely in awe of Galway's renditions of these pieces.
