how to record a flute

For my album, I recorded some of the songs with a mic in front of me and a small condenser mic above me then we mixed the sounds together. It gives it a wider and more present sound.

long tones

One thing I did for my students was record really long tones with no vibrato on my computer all the way up the scale. I burned them to CD, and told them to work on matching the tone. Just tell her to devote 15 - 20 minutes of that per day. If she can hear it's off she should be able to hear when it'...

there's no reason ...

I studied jazz flute as my college/university major. There is no reason you couldn't work on a solo they could incorporate into the piece. Maybe they could have you play off a melody line from the piano sheets. The only thing I would worry about is an inability to be heard over the reset of the band...
