Re: Curious about Skype Lessons

As someone who benefited SUPREMELY from top-tier Skype lessons 'early in the game' when these ideas were new..... over a DECADE ago... My top teacher and I focused on AUDIO quality and NO video. But unless you are a pro-level player, Skype lessons are a waste of time. Flute playing is SO PHYSICAL an...

Agreed. At this if you're only considering Authentic Yamaha, you're well ahead the rest of the curve.

Re: Introduction, and in a need of assistance plz

Yeah. The photos look good, but the details of the sale seem iffy. In reality a QUALITY student flute will cost you between $800-1100USD. That's the truth. Anything less is likely used and in dire need of service, or it is sub-standard Learning a classical musical instrument is not a cheap endeavor....

Re: Negotiating Flute Price

As a technician and maker, I will make a few comments because I have also worked with the staff at both the US distributor for Miyazawa and the staff you mentioned in the Netherlands. These are not the same instruments that you are comparing. The version of the 602 that is sold in Europe is set up w...

Re: I'm getting a new flute! Pearl vs. Azumi

Azumi, hands down. No contest. Much better headjoint and overall quality control. I'd also take a look at Sonare, Amadeus, and NorthBridge. They have things in similar price ranges.

Re: Repair or Replace advice

I know that I'm a month late on this one, and a resolution has likely been determined, but I'd say to replace it. A quality overhaul will surpass the value of the instrument (maybe $300 right now), and a repad in that price range won't extend its life for very long. These instruments were not design...

I bought one at the Atlanta Flute Fair, and I love it! Everyone should have one!

Re: How many play flute and another instrument?

I can play just about any flute you throw at me, but particularly piccolo, flute, and the low flutes.... The entire recorder family (Sopranino through Bass), Irish flute, etc.... I'm also a harpist... As for IAS (Instrument Acquisition Syndrome), I don't have to worry about that. Instead I have it's...

Re: Noise reduction

There are quite a lot of options. I'd use your discretion here. Cork, suede, leather, felt, teflon, paper, many varieties of synthetic fabrics... It's all subjective.

Though if you don't have any experience in repair, or very little, I wouldn't advise attempting this work on your own.

At that price point, you need to be looking at Amadeus, Azumi, NorthBridge, and Sonare. Disregard the rest.

Re: How to recognize Miyazawa head joint type?

Look on the lip plate. Quite a few of their older models had a number engraved on the side of the lip plate, or on the underside. But that's not always been the case. My Miyazawa has an MZ7 head on it, and there's a number 7 on the outer right hand side of the lip plate. I used to have an MZ8, and i...

Of course! Quite a lot of plastic instruments are made from a plastic commercially called 'Delrin/Acetal' (Polyoxymethylene). Though other plastics like ABS ( Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) are extremely common as well. ;)

Re: Yamaha Picc

I have to disagree that crafting wood and plastic is the same process. Wood burns; plastic melts. Using the same tools for drilling out the bore of a wood piccolo would ruin them with plastic. Just like you canNOT drill laminated sheets--the plastic coating melts to and destroys the drill bits due ...
