You don't have to be a student to play in the college orchestra??

No, but I am a student, just a "Lifelong Learner". Adults can take classes at community colleges too. The Principal Winds are all adults, me on flute, a PhD in Math on Clarinet, a Unix Sys Admin on Bassoon, and an Oboe teacher (she has a music degree). The concertmaster has a Masters in Violin Performance and has his own studio. There is a cellist with a PhD in Fluid Mechanics. We even had a Roman Catholic Nun who played violin with us for a while.

I'm glad you mentioned the community college. I never would've thought of that! I just looked into my local college, and they do have a symphonic band as well as a woodwind band. You just have to be enrolled and pay the tuition to be in the class. Is that the case for you, cflutist?

Yes, that is true. I am enrolled as a student and pay the tuition which is not much since the performance classes are only one unit.

And in CA, since you can't take a course more than 4 times, the conductor just comes up with new classes and section numbers.

Our local college has an orchestra, day band, night band, jazz band, woodwind ensembles and the like. The conductor has a PhD in Music Composition so he is also one of the Music Theory teachers.

The second flute just retired from his CPA job and is going back to school for a music degree. We will be performing the Cimarosa Concerto together next spring.

I have been chewing on the idea of going back to school for a music degree for a while now .... I'm just SCARED! I graduated from college in 1978 and am scared to death that I am too old to learn now .....

But .... I think I will take the next step and look into it ... Maybe I will get the courage to do it!

Something interesting that I learned today... I thought I would share.

Evidently the Principal oboist of the LA symphony is in her early twenties and hasn't finished her undergrad in music yet. Or at least this was true at one point or another.

I just thought I would share this interesting tidbit.
