New To Forum - Shopping For New Flute!

Post by MeowingDooper » Tue Jun 16, 2015 6:55 pm

Hello all,

I'm currently in the market to buy a new, much needed upgrade from my student model Gemeinhardt.
Yes, I'm half way through my college career and I play on a student model flute. It surprises many people.
I had briefly mentioned this to my private lesson teacher, but we didn't go into depth about it due to it being towards the end of the school year.
I've been browsing online and playing in stores/conferences whenever I can to see what I like but there is just so much out there.

My budget is $4,000.

Models I've been looking at are:

-Powell Sonare 709 Series.
-Pearl 795.
-Amadeus 900.
-Azumi 3.

Feedback on the ones I've been eyeing?
Any other models that I should consider looking at?

I appreciate your guys' input! (:

Does not surprise me. If you are a good player, you can sound good on almost anything :)

The Amadeus, and the Azumi are hybrid flutes. These flute are advertised to have hand cut headjoints. However the body and mechanism are mediocre at best. Not bad, but not great. You can find a real Altus or Haynes for that kind of money. Especially used! AND You will get a far better instrument in my opinion.

Pearl flutes are great. Some people like them. Some people don't. But you will get more flute for the money then messing around with the others.

Here are other models to try.
Altus 807/907
Dean Yang AY series
Haynes Q1
Jupiter 611/711
Miyazawa 102/202/402/Legacy
Muramatsu EX
Sankyo CF201
Yamaha YFL500/600 series

This is just a guideline to searching other brands. I have played on almost all of these, but for me the Miyazawa and the Muramatsu are my favorites. All of these models should be within your budget. Do not forget to read the FAQ as well.

I just double on flute, but I know getting a custom cut head was the best thing I could do for the money. As a student, you might be going for some kind of fingering advantage though. Good luck and do let us know what you decided to do.
