Music is one of the few things in this world that can impact people in a positive way, that can help people. we musicians should spread it around!

A Sky band flute is not a well known brand. It could be OK, but I have my doubts. Most of these unknown names come from China and the quality control can vary from good to awful. I would never buy one of these without trying it first and that's not usually possible with online purchases from eBay and the like.

You also referenced a "hole dolce". Pearl flutes make an open hole Dolce model (model 695) and a closed hole Dolce (model 685). Pearl is a well respected flute maker. These are probably a bit pricey for a beginner though...

A Google search also showed a "16 Hole Dolce Black flute" - that one is an unknown. To my knowledge, none of the well known flute makers sell flutes in different colors (black, red, pink, blue, purple, green, etc.). I'd advise staying away from such flutes unless you want to make a lamp from it.

Some players buy cheap flutes to use when playing in less than desireable locations: marching band (i.e. raining on your parade or football game), playing in clubs where people get drunk and fall on the instruments, etc. Even then, the buyer must beware what they are getting.

I'd suggest that you read the FAQ. It has lots of good tips about choosing a flute to buy. Especially see Section 1 - Flutes for Beginners.

1) What group do you play for?
I play in my school's marching band, concert band, and I'm auditioning for jazz band next year. I'm also auditioning for my town's youth symphony (I auditioned and made it a few years back, but I didn't make principal, I made concert so I didn't do it. I don't know why, it would've been a good experience for me). Sometimes I play at church and other events.

2) What kind of flute do you play?
Amadeus AF700

3)What is your dream flute?
24k gold Muramatsu or Powell

4)What flute players do you enjoy listening to?
Ian Anderson, Jean-Pierre Rampal, James Galway, Greg Patillo

5) What is your favorite type of music to play or favorite piece you have ever played?
Classical, classical, classical. I don't have a favorite piece. Some I've liked more than others, but my choir director has taught us kids in the choir that our favorite piece is the one that we're singing (or, in this case, playing) at that moment.

1) Over the summer, I played in a sort-of folk / indie band with a few friends. We're called The Shade Plant Bandits. Hopefully we'll play some more shows when we're all home from college during the winter.

2) I play a Gemeinhardt 3s from the 70s. It's wonderful

3) I would love someday to have a gold Muramatsu or a wooden Sankyo...or a Miyazawa or a Powell or a Pearl...etc...

4) I enjoy listening to James Galway and Nina Perlove's instructional videos on youtube

5) In addition to the music I wrote/played for the Shade Plants, I really enjoy playing video game music! (I know, I'm a nerd.) A lot of serious musicians dismiss video game sound tracks out of hand, but really, Nobuo Uematsu is an incredible composer:

A bit of an old thread...but I was looking back at my posts back when I didn't know any better, and I feel quite ashamed. But nevertheless amused. So some changes:

1) What group do you play for?(college band, marching band, for fun)
youth symphony, local conservatory community division's woodwind quintet, used to play in a wind ensemble also sponsored by the same conservatory, and of course my school pep band and wind ensemble (details of how school band goes are...rather horrific)

2) What kind of flute do you play?
Yamaha 584H, I am really hoping to upgrade one day...seriously. the headjoint really really really suits my BA-BAM loud sound, but at times I get a little angry with it. I'm also frustrated with the mechanics at times. I am so ready to switch to an offset G.

3)What is your dream flute?
Not sure, I would like handmade flute. Powell? Maybe Burkart? I think the Burkart M2 headjoint will fit me nicely

4)What flute players do you enjoy listening to?
Definitely NOT Galway as I have foolishly stated in the past! But DEFINITELY Emmanuel Pahud, Alexandra Grot, Marina Piccinini, Christina Jennings, Amy Porter, Jasmine Choi, Julius Baker, Moyse, Rampal, Wincenc, Baxtresser...the list could go on for centuries, those are just a few names. I am hoping to study a bit with Porter in the summer. I would really love that. I'm also becoming a fan of Denis Bouriakov and Sharon Bezaly. Their technical skills are incredible.

5) What is your favorite type of music to play or favorite piece you have ever played?
After playing Chaminade for a while, I am very sick of French conservatory contest pieces. I also despise Chaminade now. However, the Bach sonatas are a pleasure to play when you really listen for the genius of the composition. And here's come the laundry list... My favorite flute pieces are: Poulenc's sonata, Griffes' poem, Hue Fantaisie, Widor Suite, Franck's Sonata, Martin Ballade, Dutilleux Sonatine, Jolivet Chant de linos (not really planning to play that...haha, but actually a pleasure to listen to!), the Nielsen, the Khachaturian, Burton, Reinecke concerto and sonata...list could go on for centuries.

Wow! It IS an old thread!

Let's see... what has changed for me...

I no longer play with any groups. I am studying part time (finishing up the last 3 classes for my degree). I do run the music program at my church, so that has a children's and adult choir that I work with.

My dream flute changes everyday. Sometimes it's Miyazawa. Sometimes Brannen... Burkhart, Nagahara... I can't make up my mind!

Favorite players? Christina Jennings, Marina Piccinini, and Jim Walker.

Favorite type of music? Eh. I'm eclectic. Less classical now though. I guess as I'm moving away from the idea of an orchestral career and more into the idea of a studio career (or a flute making/repair gig), I'm broadening my horizons. Ethnic/Folk music for sure. Lady Gaga is fun. Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Doris Day, Christina Aguilera, Celine Dion, Josh Groban, Andrea Bocelli... As long as it's not (c)rap music, I'm probably a fan.
