Hi everyone,
I had 3 wisdom teeth pulled 12 days ago and my surgeon told me I developed a minor dry socket. He recommended not packing it or anything since I was not in intense pain. My pain came and went, but it was bearable and manageable with pain meds. He told me I should be fine by now (my follow up was last Thursday). As of now, I feel completely fine. The severity and frequency of my "pain spells" have gone down and now I'm just in very minor discomfort for maybe a few minutes once a day. My question is how long should I wait before playing? I've been playing a little bit just to see how I'm doing and I actually practiced for 40 minutes today. When I play, I feel fine I'm just a little tense because I haven't played in a few days. Also, after practicing I feel a small tingle like I flossed my teeth too hard near my sockets. Should I just put off playing and wait it out? I don't want to make it worse.
Thanks!

Re: Wisdom Teeth: The Flute and Dry Socket
I had my wisdom teeth cut out last December. My oral surgeon told me to not pick my flute back up for at least a month because, as you see, it will cause dry socket. I think I'd leave it alone for a month, but always do what your doctor advises. Hope everything works out!

Re: Wisdom Teeth: The Flute and Dry Socket
I was playing piccolo in my collegiate marching band a week after I had my wisdom teeth out. That being said however... I had already suffered the worst. The packing on the bottom left had dissolved too early (within 36 hours) and I had developed a dry socket. I didn't sleep for three days I was in so much pain. They packed it with gauze and taught me how to treat it myself since I would be too far away to come back. I didn't have any swelling at any time during the whole ordeal so that's how I got back to playing so quickly.
I would wait another week or two to play. You don't want this tension to tear open the wounds. I know that I did otherwise but I was already in pain and was on strong pain meds so I thought... why not?
