im playing a movement from cpe bach's unaccompanied sonata in a minor. does anyone know if you play the trills and ornaments only on the repeat, or are certain things played both times through? it isn't mentioned, it's part of the bach style though isn't it? thanks

usually in baroque music, the ornaments in pieces vary in each repitition. im currently playing a lot of baroque music...teleman, bach, and handel and its the same throughout...the first time its usually a little less than the second time, and you can litterally go crazy with it, listen to recordings and youll see that performers create their own ornaments for the songs, so it isnt necessary to do everything the music says.

however, i think you should do the ornaments each time that the editor put in because those are just guidelines usually and the performer usually adds more because the baroque music was written to be freely expressed...the notes are just guides and you have a little fun playing around :) hopefully that helped a little...

along fliccolo's comments, if the ornament is from the manuscript source, then that's what the composer intended to hear. As for an edited edition, you can choose whether or not to add that in (the first time), or add it in a repeat. Just remember, in the Baroque/Galant era, playing the repeat as written is the biggest no-no in canon law.
