If you are looking for a piece of music and you
can''t find it written specifically for the flute what other instrument would
come the closest? i.e. if you could find music written for______ would that be
playable on the flute. One person I talked with said music for the oboe might be
usable?

i would agree, the oboe is generally considered the
closest. also violin is pretty close too, but depending on the music you may
have to deal with double or triple stops and the violin can go slightly lower
than the flute. however, there have been pieces that have been transcribed for
flute from violin and arranged in such a way that work really well on flute.

I know this question was a while ago but I just
purchased a sheetmusic book and it's for flute or oboe. So my guess would be
oboe is the closest.

oboe, trumpet, and some music has guitar that will
work. I have tried both. For instance, Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin, is
one that I ended up going to the guitar part. I couldn't find the flute part
and then I played it and couldn't figure out the difference in the music of the
guitar and flute on the CD. Like i said oboe, trumpet, and some music that has
guitar, will work for a flute.[]
