Re: Trembling embouchure/ arms while playing
i have no idea what you do for practicing so forgive me if i say what you are already doing. in order to gain control over the muscles in your lips, you have a to do a lot of long notes. i've never really had issues with trembling lips unless i stopped doing long notes (long tones) for a while. it r...

Re: Breathing
Not only the capacity of your lungs determine how long you are able to play a phrase. It's also a function of the development of your particular tone. This is because when you work on your tone you learn how to save the air you have inside, how not to waste it is a work of art, believe me, and also...

Re: teaching flute
if this is to teach yourself then you should get a teacher, the DVD may not be reliable. if you are the teacher… you don't need a DVD to show your students how to play, (it may be unreliable anyway), you should show them how to play yourself. as for the books, i don't think there is a single book, o...

Re: I want to completely start over my Embouchure.
we all have irregularities in our lips. sometimes i look at professionals' natural lips and they are totally different to their embouchure, e.g. my flute teacher at the sydney conservatorium (she is principal flute in the aus. ballet & opera orchestra) has really symmetrical lips but when she plays ...

Re: A question for those who own or have played gold flutes
hey congrats! it's always nice to play with an orchestra to get all the tone colours you don't get with a piano. the cimarosa is so much fun to play and you two flutes had really good communication together.

Re: I want to completely start over my Embouchure.
The thing is that everyone has completely different lips, so our embouchures are always going to be very different. You have to do what works for you…. From a lot of experimentation myself, and from observing my own students and sometimes changing their embouchures, I've generally observed that a re...

Re: Tone Building, Sluring, "Pecky" Double Tonguing, H
If you want a book on tone I would recommend Moyse's de la sonorite. It targets specific tone ideas and problems and is a fantastic warm-up. He also talks about intonation. =] For double tonguing, actually Nina Perlove's video on it gave me some good ideas for practicing. I think you have to start o...

Re: Unsure if I'm where I'm supposed to be (going to college
I was in the same position as you a couple of months ago. The best advice I can give is to set realistic goals, and doing different things every day (in a different order or switching what you do between days for example) is actually a good idea. I started out with stupidly high expectations and goa...

Re: Question about Mozart Flute Concerto in D?
p.s. Aperto means to play it broadly and majestically, and since this marking was rarely used outside of Mozart's operatic works… perhaps there's a hint that it needs to be lyrical? Mozart's encouraging us to go for it, don't hold back. Sing this movement proudly and let the music shine through you :D

Re: Question about Mozart Flute Concerto in D?
It just needs to be alive. I read somewhere that Mozart's concertos should be like champagne… so bubbly and fun and light. We also need to bear in mind the dance like feel… so a strong sense of pulse is important I think, but still with a smoothness of phrasing. Listen to recordings by people like S...

Re: i want to play the piccolo
i don't think there's too much of a question of whether you can actually play it or not, because if you play flute, it's not too hard to adapt to a piccolo. however, as lula said, you should try one before you buy one. just to see what it's like, see if you really like it, etc. if you want to play p...

well great! so your teacher can get you all ready for the performance
and yeah, as an AMEB teacher myself, I would put you at intermediate level if you are doing 5th grade.
