Ligeti Double concerto for flute and oboe

A couple of weeks ago I had the supreme pleasure of seeing this piece played by the Boston Symphony with Elizabeth Rowe (flute) and John Ferrillo (oboe) as the soloists and I just wanted to share some thoughts on this with you all and see what any of you think about it. I had personally never heard ...

Re: So...

It is an unfortunate reality that when you rely on something you love to be your main source of income it does change what your relationship to that thing is. This can be both a blessing and a curse. It also doesn't help that so many things in the music world are beyond your control, so I completely...

Re: Amadeus AF-900 (Haynes)

I am so happy to hear it was worked out and it is great that they were willing to be so helpful about fixing the issue too. Absolutely crazy that the first one was so off though. This had me worried that my friend had just gotten lucky, but I am very glad to hear they were able to redeem themselves ...

Re: Mailing Flute for Maintenance

The shipping companies have said that you must expect that packages will be dropped, fall off the back of a truck, etc., Really? I mean understand packing to protect against these sorts of things, but I don't think the expectation should that these things will happen... That just seems like awful P...

Re: nerves

If you have access to a computer with a webcam or a video camera you can try recording yourself while you are playing. Even just audio recording yourself might be enough to simulate the adrenaline/nerves you experience while playing and give you more practice in how to deal with them. Also, I had so...

Re: Another audition question

Yes, keep going! Actually, even great musicians make mistakes now and then, but know how to recover in a way that makes it sound right! To be able to recover belongs to the art of music... :) Actually music played perfectly live in an anomaly ;) I had a long talk with the Head of the College of Mus...

Re: Another audition question

With out a doubt keep going! :) I used to always stop because I felt like in an audition setting I should at least show that I know I messed something up but after many years and talking to teacher who judge auditions (and also having had the opportunity to be a judge for chair placements) it makes ...

Re: Notes not coming out

I think the key there was you weren't even thinking about it. It's amazing but our brains can be our own worst enemies sometimes! Sometimes if I have trouble with something every time I go and try that thing, mentally I am aware I am doing something I consider "hard" and make changes without realizi...

Yeah that makes it sound like they are just saying clad to make it sound more fancy than plated.

Re: Just a Thought.. if Gold Plating does little/nothing...

In my opinion you're right on the money. The only material that I think plating might change the sound is platinum. MAYBE. Platinum is far more dense than either gold or silver, and every time I've compared platinum plated and their non plated counterparts I've noticed a difference in how they play...

Re: Yamaha YFL 421 vs Gemeinhardt 2S

Hello :) I sadly have to say you "probably" would be better off going with the Yamaha in terms of being fairly certain of the quality/durability of the instrument you will get. Sadly Gemmy's (and I say sadly because I have one and have always been a big fan of their flutes) have in the last few year...

Re: Creativity Block

Hrm... I am sad to say when I am feeling burntout/overloade etc, I usually take a day or two break from whatever I am working on. Spend sometime revisiting old things that I love playing or sometimes I even need a few days off. From conversations with other people it apparently is odd, but every now...

Re: 3D Printed FLute

3D printing is in itself really neat. Making a flute with a 3D printer though makes me feel really uneasy... probably for no good reason but it just feel wrong somehow. Will have to wait until I get home from work to watch the video though ;)
